Review- Conan: Black Colossus

Image is by RodrigoKatrakas, and used under a CC BY-SA 3.0 license

Spoilers for the story…

Reading Black Colossus makes you really realize how much more Howard influenced our modern games and adventures even more than Tolkien (and this is coming from a LOTR lover). The tale of the dark sorcerer, Thugra Khotan, entombed in a mysterious dome rising above the desert and the dried out river that had flowed with strength in his age. That’s a mystery that needs solving. That’s a dungeon that needs to be explored, and there’s treasure to be had—at great peril!

It’s interesting to the elements of investigation touched on in the story, noting that the thief Shevatas put significant effort into his preparations. “Not for naught had he gained access into darksome cults, had harkened to the grisly whispers of the votaries of Skelos under midnight trees, and read the forbidden iron-bound books of Vathelos the Blind.” We can see not only in Conan, but in Shevatas the clear archetype of a cunning thief, who undertakes their business with great care, reflected in the description of his opening the door with a hidden combination on secret catches. This is continued with the fight with the guardian serpent, with poison of a snake exactly like it. “…the obtaining of that venom from the fiend-haunted swamps of Zingara would have made a saga in itself.”

There are of course elements that trouble a modern reader—the choices of language dismissing some of Howard’s fantastic cultures as uncivilized. The other standout is the perceived need to diminish Princess Yasmela through diminutive language to paint her as the damsel in distress, helpless without the aid of a masculine hero though she is the (abet caretaker) head of a kingdom. This of course culminates in her being snatched by the villain at the climax of the major battle and being taken as some sort of sacrifice, naked on an altar, and the descriptions of Conan’s passions for her overwhelming his reason—probably the ultimate source of many objectifying depictions of women in pulp sword & sorcery.

I enjoyed this passage and the image it invoked:

“Conan listened unperturbed. War was his trade. Life was a continual battle, or series of battles, since his birth. Death had been a constant companion. It stalked horrifically at his side; stood at his shoulder beside the gaming-tables; its bony fingers rattled the wine-cups. It loomed above him, a hooded and monstrous shadow, when he lay down to sleep. He minded its presence no more than a king minds the presence of his cupbearer. Some day its bony grasp would close; that was all. It was enough that he lived through the present.”

The battle of the pass and the Shemla Valley is also evocative, with some great descriptions of the actions of each side, and an interesting tactical depiction. I enjoyed this portion perhaps the most, and saw parallels to the battle of the first volume of the Black Company.

This story also speaks to the heroic journey from thief or adventurer to general and later ruler that characters were envisioned as following in early editions of RPGs.

So in sum, there’s some bits that we are better off without in our fiction. But there’s also some really interesting plot elements that you can see have informed our current stories and games. So as with many past authors, there is much to emulate, some to avoid, and some to steal from Howard’s stories.

Night Cauldron's Lair

Empire of the Ghouls players of mine, please check out another article...

Secret cave lair of the Night Cauldron of Chernobog. Lady Illmalad’s dhampir son, Fane, is a leader of the cult in this region and often is here with the other cultists. Spawn of Chernobog, Dark Folk, and other monsters.

This article builds out the brief description in the hex crawl key into a dungeon summary. I'm using the linked map from Dyson Logos, however I won't be reproducing it as it isn't one of his licensed maps.

Mission:

Primary: Find and capture or kill Fane, Lady Illmalad’s dhampir son.

Secondary: Degrade the Night Cauldron of Chernobog’s ability to conduct operations in the region. Destroy as many of its members and infrastructure as possible.

Adversary Roster

Patrols of a cult fanatic and two cultists check the exterior of the cave every hour, leaving one of the cave entrances unguarded for the short time.

A ceremony of Chernobog is ongoing in the large chamber—the cultists call it the “Cauldron.”

A pool of black, brackish water sits in the lowest portion of the Cauldron. Sometimes offerings are tossed in the pool, which hides an otyugh.

The upper galleries of the cavern act as meeting areas and sleeping quarters for cultist leaders. The carved out rooms are storage areas for food and drink.

NPCs

Gharsh: Darakhul Ghoul priest of Vardesain. Possesses notes from a Darakhul High Priest of Vardesain named Radomir Marrowblight, noted as the high priest of the Bone Cathedral of Vandekhul. These letters urge Gharsh to heed the guidance of “the Father of the High Feast” and to “keep in mind the interests of the Creed of All Flesh” as he negotiates with the Night Cauldron and Red Sisters to forge an alliance. They also contain references to “the rise of the Hunger Cults” which will “free the Darakhul from the shackles of the Feeding Laws.”

Sister Agonia: Red Sister of Marena. Meeting with the Night Cauldron to help negotiate an alliance between their cults along with the Creed of All Flesh. Sent by Blood Mother Flayedva, the high priestess of Gybick.

Fane: Dhampir commander, son of Lady Illmalad. Possesses the Book of Endless Dark, a gift from Nargoth.

Nargoth: Dark Voice, priest of Chernobog. Fane’s mentor in his studies of the mysteries of Chernobog. He possesses a letter from Kenas Sipkiln noting that “the work on the excavation of the Midnight Temple in the ruins of Nordheim goes well,” and that the restoration work is “on track for completion by the date of the Blood Wedding early next year.” The letters go on to praise the “Lord of the Night for his inspiration and infinite wisdom is allying with the ghouls of the Father of the High Feast and the Red Mother.” Finally he notes that their combined might will “sweep the feeble peoples and gods of Midgard away as Lord Chernobog should have done in the Vanir War of old.”

Other Secrets & Clues

The Order of Battle for Lady Illmalad’s forces includes 20 light infantry men-at-arms working directly for her and her advisors. The Band of the Twice Damned possesses a company sized force composed of heavy and light infantry, archers, and a contingent of cavalry. A further company sized force guards Gybick under Lady Selena Bonecrusher, but will not necessarily aid Lady Illmalad.

The Twice Damned’s hideout is nearby, but their main force is encamped near Jatow.

Lady Illmalad’s ability to influence the region is hampered by the flowing water of the Yoshtula, which she cannot cross, so she uses her proxies by necessity.

Homebrew World: Expanded Ancestry Options

By default in my world I only allow certain player ancestries because most others are a bit too rare in the mundane world. However, some campaigns go beyond the world or range into remote or forgotten regions. In those campaigns, the list below provides an authoritative list of the ancestries that are thematically appropriate for my universe. I will note exceptions by exclusion in the campaign write-up. I’m also including a write-up about each species in my setting so players can use the information to craft their backstories appropriately for the setting.

Descriptions

Astral Elf

Hailing from colonies in both the Astral Plane and amongst the stars of space, Astral Elves are the heirs to great spaceborne empires and powerful magic that drives their flying ships through the void to explore new frontiers.

Bugbear

Bugbears are found in greater numbers in remote areas, but also have communities in many large cities. They have great traditions of folk magic both arcane and divine, as well as a legacy of being talented and stealthy hunters.

Cambion

Cambions are the direct offspring of powerful fiends of all varieties from the lower planes. They lead diverse and often traumatic life experiences, often needing to fight to survive. Cambions are also inclined to oppose others of their kind, seeing them as competitors for power and control. Only one cambion may be part of a party.

Changeling

Changelings are humanoids possessed of the strange skill of being able to alter their appearance. Some discover this talent in their adolescence, while others grow up in changeling communities. Generally shunned in most societies when discovered, being a changeling is a hard life. Some adopt a particular persona and simply live out their lives, while others go off adventuring or journeying, changing their appearance in every place they find themselves.

Chthonic Scion

Chthonic scions are touched or literally descended from Dalquiel or Rindriaze. They most often manifest in families of Aasimar, already embued with the blood of celestials. These mysterious figures possess abilities to comfort or speed the dying upon their way. They are extremely rare, and often become known as saints for their activities.

Deep Gnome

Deep gnomes have bluish skin and have spent much more time underground than their surface swelling cousins. They often have experience in surviving and living in subterranean environments, and their culture emphasizes crafting to a lesser degree than other gnomes.

Derro

A subterranean people with blue and purplish skin, white shocks of hair, and wide eyes from generations in dark caverns, the derro may be related to dwarves, duergar, or gnomes. Some isolated communities of derro have taken to worship of strange eldritch beings or discovered corrupting artifacts, giving many who are familiar with the underground the false idea that all derro are insane. This is not the case, and many thriving communities of derro exist in hidden sanctuaries.

Dhampir

Not quite living and yet not quite dead, dhampir arise from a variety of circumstances—but most often after an encounter with a vampire. They possess a hunger like their undead kin and vampiric powers.

Dragonborn (Chromatic, Gem, & Metallic)

Dragonborn are rare in many lands, but many dwell with the draconic populations in the Thornspire Highlands. They possess some of the powers of their true dragon forebears, but are not as powerful as half-dragons.

Drow

An elvish people that primarily live in matriarchal societies in large cities deep beneath the earth, Drow are known to have potent spellcasters, and strong survivors against the alien entities in the deep places of the world.
